About Josephine
Josephine Patino is an eclectic artist whose work spans two decades. Originally from Santiago, Chile, she moved with her family to New York in 1972. A path of spiritual discovery led her to study first yoga and meditation, and later reiki and shiatsu. During the 1980’s, both of Patino’s brothers were taken by the AIDS crisis. Devastated by her brothers’ deaths but
inspired by their lives, she found comfort in art. In 1987 she began studying ceramics at the historic Greenwich House in the West Village.
Having taken a break from ceramics to pursue other artistic interests, Patino came back to the clay as the result of a chance meeting with art consultant Danette Koke – who upon becoming acquainted with Patino's work immediately commissioned a piece. Since then she has been actively creating and is quickly being recognized as an eclectic ceramic artist. Drawing on her life experience as well as eastern philosophy, spiritual teachings, and yoga, her influences include African Art, Hopi Indian art, Picasso, Brancusi, Matisse, and others. Believing that clay is infused with spiritual energy, her work begins with an intention but no attachment to a result. The clay ‘guides’ her work, helping her create what is meant to be. Her unique fusion of ceramic art and spiritual study is yielding brilliant work, some of which has been featured at the Jane Hartsook Gallery, the Sunset Courthouse Art Exhibition, and most recently at the Ramscale Gallery as part of the Exhibition for the Ascent Leadership Organization. Works have been commissioned worldwide, though Patino most enjoys showcasing her art right at home in New York City.
